Leigh on October 24th, 2008 Thank you for this site. I'm new(ish)- just over a year to home education, feeling like I'm already failing my eldest(12yrs). I seem to have a large lack of inspiration, but your site has already given me some ideas so thank you :)
Julie on October 21st, 2008 about Homeschooled Kids CarnivalHi,I think your website looks really good. I have home schooled my daughter who is 12 for 3 years and was wondering if you would consider having a page for home schooled children to get to know each other or would you have any idea of an alternative site. Mmy daughter is very shy and I think it would be a great way for her and many other home schooled children to chat and make friends. AND Judy on October 22nd, 2008 about Homeschool Videos Hi, have just viewed your video and am still applauding. I homeschool my 6 children and am looking for international email or snail mail penpals for them. | Thank you to Julie and Judy for your comments. There is a yahoo group for children and young people who are home educated. It is run and administered by two experienced moderators, and would be a great place for homeschooled children to get to know each other. The link is HECHildren. |
Sarah on October 20th, 2008 about Fiction about HomeschoolingHi! I found your blog via someone elses and was interested to see you recommend books about homeschoolers. We have just finished reading one which ties in with the Schools films event next week. It is called Nim's Island and is by Wendy Orr. It is about a girl living on a remote island with her father. Her schooling had definitely been 'autonomous', but it is made clear that she is bright and well able to take care of herself. My older son has loved it and we hope the film is as good! | Thank you Sarah - I have added it to the books page. It looks a great book and mine want to try it out! |
Emma on October 19th, 2008 Thanks for sharing your great ideas and resources. They're fantastic and I look forward to giving as many of them as possible a go.
Natalie on October 15th, 2008 I like this article I found recently that your readers might find reassuring? Unschool v School Article - Education From the Free Eye by Kevin Snavley | Thank you Natalie - that is a great article - very reassuring! I will add it to the Encouragement section. Thanks for your comment. |
Mariah on September 7th, 2008 about Goal SettingWhat a powerful lesson you have given to your children! These life lessons just as important as the "basics". Thank you for sharing...
Amanda on August 28th, 2008 I wanted to tell you how great your website is. I am starting to home educate my 11 yr old from Sept. I have been very anxious about it. Your website has really helped me to realise that I'm on the right track, as well as inspiring me with more ideas. Many thanks, and appreciation. I will be checking in on your website regularly for help and encouragement. | It is really wonderful to get comments from people who are finding my website useful. Thank you all so much. |
Gabi on August 7th, 2008 left a comment about Unit StudiesThank you so much for this amazing website. I love your ideology. We have been homeschooling for almost two years now. We unschool and it works and we love it, but you have given me some great inspiration to incorporate a little bit more into our lives through reading books. We read at least 2 books a day but the idea of using it as a hook to follow up on more learning is awesome. I look forward to reading more and more on your site. And sharing.
Comments from Linda on July 22nd, 2008 about Fiction about HomeschoolingAbout ten years ago I came across a series of books in my local Christian bookstore. Unfortunately, I didn't take note of the author or title of the books. The only thing that I can vaguely remember is that the books are about two homeschooled girls. I think these girls are aged about 8 and 10 years. Anyway, because the father moves around the world (perhaps with his work) the girls go with him and have some adventures. I know that this is a tall ask, but have you heard about the book series that I am trying to describe. | I hadn't heard of the series, but I did manage to track them down. They are a series of books written by Stacy Towle Morgan and Pamela Querin. The book description from Amazon for book one - Adventure in theCarribean - says "Eight-year-old Hope Brown and her little sister, Annie, love to travel, andbecause of their dad's job, the two home-schooled girls have lots ofopportunities. Join the fun as they visit exciting countries and meetinspiring Christians from all over the world. In Adventure in the Caribbean, Hope and Annie take a trip to sunny Antiguain the West Indies. There, the sisters make a new friend a young Antiguangirl named Zoe. When Zoe and the girls discover a hidden map, they set outon an exciting search for treasure. Will they find it before the Browns haveto go home?" I have added the books to my Fiction about Homeschooling page. Thanks to Linda for putting me onto it! |

We are just getting involved in 'Flat Travelers'
Based upon the book 'Flat stanley' where a boy is flattened and can send himself anywhere in an envelope, he travels the world.
The children make their own 'flat traveller', laminate it and then send it to the host family with a journal which the family then complete and return with some momentoes, pictures, photos etc of what they have been getting up to with their flat traveller.
The journal then makes up into a scrapbook which the children can keep. Ours will have a world map, maps of countries etc. as well as the journals to see what we can learn as the flat travellers go on their adventures.
I dont know if you have heard of it/taken part before but I thought I would mention it.
We've signed up to the Yahoo group to get involved.
Comments from Sonya Chappell on May 20th, 2008 about Make a Card Game
If you remember we followed your suggestion and had great fun making our own Top Trumps Fish and Bird cards.
Recently William came up with something similar which has worked really well for us. Both the children like the Top Ten book series (Top Ten Dinosaurs, Top Ten Inventions etc) which rate things according to 5 categories and then come up with the ‘Top Ten.’ William chose Top Ten Disasters (!!!) but it actually worked really well including things like the Black Death, Chernobyl, the Permian extinction with categories like William’s favourite and violence. I’m pleased to say Catherine chose the rather more accessible: Top Ten Pets with categories like amount of work and cuddliness!
Maybe someone else would enjoy it?
Thank you all for your comments!
