G'day Julie! I have just found your site and am wishing I'd found it sooner! We are an English couple who have lived in Australia for 22 years and have been homeschooling our 2 children (9 and 11) for just under a year.

Well done on producing such a wonderful website. It's just what I needed to find at 11pm after one of those rare days when I question my sanity on pulling our kids out of the system of school to embark on a wonderful journey of true learning. Thanks!

Kim

Hi there. I stumbled upon your website this morning...looking for a British history unit of some sort. GREAT site, hey! have bookmarked it (in case you were wondering)

Ruralmama

I just added you to my list of helpful homeschool links on my blog because I cannot get over how much great information and super ideas you have here. Fantastic!

Jolene (South Africa)

I have been homeschooling my children for 4 years now and I am addicted to the Internet Homeschool sites. I must tell you that yours is one the best I have ever been on. Thanks so much for all you ideas they are going to really add to my homeschooling.

I have subscribed to your newsletter and look forward to receiving it every month. I am also going to share you site with my Homeschool Social Group.

Lucie

I am a new homeschool teacher. I moved home to my families homestead to teach my neices. I am teaching a 10-year-old with Autism and a 12-year-old that is advanced.

Last week I was feeling lost & overwhelmed. Thankfully I found this site! It was just what I needed.

Emma

Hi Julie, I have just been looking through your wonderful website. What a lot of fantastic ideas. Thank you so much for putting this altogether.

Nicola

Hello Julie, It's 11.50pm and I've just discovered your website after putting in a search for home education projects. Thanks so much for creating this site, I've only skimmed through but I know that I'll get lots of ideas of things to do and good advice which I find very reassuring!

Elaina

I recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don't know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.

Chrystine

what a treasure it is to find your newsletter!

I am VERY new to homeschooling in fact we are only into our third week and I have to admit the start is a bit overwhelming. I removed my 16 year old from public highschool after winter break...we are enrolled in a charter school to help with the process..any suggestions on websites, etc. would be appreciated. I'm looking for guidance from the ones who have gone before me!

As well as replying to Chrystine, I asked my newsletter subscribers what they would advise. You can read their replies, or contribute yourself at Start Homeschooling.

Rachel

I really like this site. I am starting childminding at home in a few months time and really want to give the children I look after a good time whilst with me, but at the same time a little learning thrown in for fun too! (without them knowing of course). This site has given me some good ideas and I can't wait to get started. Many thanks. I look forward to reading future newsletters.

Haniyyah

Just wanted to say a big 'Thank you' for all your inspiring ideas. Can't wait to get started!

Christelle

Thanks for your lovely article about the benefits of homeschooling.

I am just about to embark on home schooling after my oldest has had a year in school against my better judgement and although her school is lovely, I can see she has changed from a free spirit to a child who asks if she is allowed a drink of water! I expect huge opposition from friends and family and realise it may not be so rosy always especially on damp winter days but I feel I have to try. Your article said everything I have been dreaming in my mind about how education can be and it was nice to see that I am not crazy but that someone else has experienced the things we dream of.

We will bookmark this whole site and it's many links for future inspiration!

Krista

Hi. I just found your website by chance and I find it very inspiring. I am having a hard time getting the home learning to work and feel overwhelmed, but I think if I follow some of your ideas it may get easier. Thanks for the inspiration.

Alana

Thanks so much for your website. It is wonderful. I stumbled upon it whilst looking for new ideas to spark our homeschooling experience. Wow! What a gift!

Jessica

I really enjoy your website. I stumbled upon it while looking for a craft for my kids and found your homeschool style very similar to ours.

I home school my 3 older children (9,7,5) and plan on officially homeschooling my youngest (only 7 months right now) when he's older. Thanks for giving me some inspiration-things were feeling a bit stale here as well as a bit isolating lately. We have met mean man winter here which means a lot more indoor time. Thanks again!

Olga

Wow! This is one of the most inspiring web-sites I have ever seen. Thank you for sharing. I am in a slump now and feel that your web-site is an answer to prayers.

AtHomeScience on November 16th, 2008 about Effects of Computer Games

I just blogged about at MusingKris, LOL. We love games and find a lot of learning value in them.

I want to particularly mention trivia games on the computer. These really are no different than flash cards, and yet we will play these animated matching games far longer than we will flip through a stack of cards. And we'll even have fun at it, too!

When it comes to memorizing facts, these online trivia games are the most effective means I have found.

Lydia on November 11th, 2008 about Kids Blogs

This is fantastic! I am thrilled to see this -- amazing! :) I added a button to my sidebar at LittleBlueSchool.com right next to my blogroll of homeschooled kids' blogs.

Thank you so much for putting this together. My kids will definitely submit this month.

Karly on November 1st, 2008 about Effects of Computer Games

Just thought I would share another game idea with you...my son absolutely loves the game Civilization. My husband is a total history buff and I believe my son has surprised him with quite a few new facts after playing that game.

Leigh on October 24th, 2008

Thank you for this site. I'm new(ish)- just over a year to home education, feeling like I'm already failing my eldest(12yrs). I seem to have a large lack of inspiration, but your site has already given me some ideas so thank you :)

Julie on October 21st, 2008 about Homeschooled Kids Carnival

Hi,I think your website looks really good. I have home schooled my daughter who is 12 for 3 years and was wondering if you would consider having a page for home schooled children to get to know each other or would you have any idea of an alternative site. Mmy daughter is very shy and I think it would be a great way for her and many other home schooled children to chat and make friends.

AND Judy on October 22nd, 2008 about Homeschool Videos

Hi, have just viewed your video and am still applauding. I homeschool my 6 children and am looking for international email or snail mail penpals for them.

Thank you to Julie and Judy for your comments. There is a yahoo group for children and young people who are home educated. It is run and administered by two experienced moderators, and would be a great place for homeschooled children to get to know each other. The link is HECHildren.

Hi! I found your blog via someone elses and was interested to see you recommend books about homeschoolers.

We have just finished reading one which ties in with the Schools films event next week. It is called Nim's Island Amazon UK and is by Wendy Orr. It is about a girl living on a remote island with her father. Her schooling had definitely been 'autonomous', but it is made clear that she is bright and well able to take care of herself. My older son has loved it and we hope the film is as good!

Thank you Sarah - I have added it to the books page. It looks a great book and mine want to try it out!

Thank you so much for this amazing website. I love your ideology. We have been homeschooling for almost two years now. We unschool and it works and we love it, but you have given me some great inspiration to incorporate a little bit more into our lives through reading books. We read at least 2 books a day but the idea of using it as a hook to follow up on more learning is awesome. I look forward to reading more and more on your site. And sharing.

Comments from Linda on July 22nd, 2008 about Fiction about Homeschooling

About ten years ago I came across a series of books in my local Christian bookstore. Unfortunately, I didn't take note of the author or title of the books. The only thing that I can vaguely remember is that the books are about two homeschooled girls. I think these girls are aged about 8 and 10 years. Anyway, because the father moves around the world (perhaps with his work) the girls go with him and have some adventures.

I know that this is a tall ask, but have you heard about the book series that I am trying to describe.

I hadn't heard of the series, but I did manage to track them down. They are a series of books written by Stacy Towle Morgan and Pamela Querin. The book description from Amazon for book one - Adventure in theCarribean - says

"Eight-year-old Hope Brown and her little sister, Annie, love to travel, andbecause of their dad's job, the two home-schooled girls have lots ofopportunities. Join the fun as they visit exciting countries and meetinspiring Christians from all over the world.

In Adventure in the Caribbean, Hope and Annie take a trip to sunny Antiguain the West Indies. There, the sisters make a new friend a young Antiguangirl named Zoe. When Zoe and the girls discover a hidden map, they set outon an exciting search for treasure. Will they find it before the Browns haveto go home?"

I have added the books to my Fiction about Homeschooling page. Thanks to Linda for putting me onto it!

Comment from Jenny on June 1st, 2008 about Kids Geography Resources

We are just getting involved in 'Flat Travelers'Based upon the book 'Flat stanley' where a boy is flattened and can send himself anywhere in an envelope, he travels the world. The children make their own 'flat traveller', laminate it and then send it to the host family with a journal which the family then complete and return with some momentoes, pictures, photos etc of what they have been getting up to with their flat traveller.

The journal then makes up into a scrapbook which the children can keep. Ours will have a world map, maps of countries etc. as well as the journals to see what we can learn as the flat travellers go on their adventures.

I dont know if you have heard of it/taken part before but I thought I would mention it.

We've signed up to the Yahoo group to get involved.

Comments from Sonya Chappell on May 20th, 2008 about Make a Card Game

If you remember we followed your suggestion and had great fun making our own Top Trumps Fish and Bird cards. Recently William came up with something similar which has worked really well for us. Both the children like the Top Ten book series (Top Ten Dinosaurs, Top Ten Inventions etc) which rate things according to 5 categories and then come up with the ‘Top Ten.’ William chose Top Ten Disasters (!!!) but it actually worked really well including things like the Black Death, Chernobyl, the Permian extinction with categories like William’s favourite and violence. I’m pleased to say Catherine chose the rather more accessible: Top Ten Pets with categories like amount of work and cuddliness! Maybe someone else would enjoy it?

Thank you all for your comments!
