Great Ways to Encourage Your Child in Homeschool Writing

by Mary
(Memphis, TN, USA)

We all know that writing is an invaluable skill in the working world. But kids usually dread writing assignments.

Have you ever thought about ways to make homeschool writing fun again? Here are a few ideas:

  1. Be silly.

Have your child make up nonsense stories. All writing is practice, so even writing nonsense will build this all important skill.

For example, have them write about the day the cat turned purple. Or about how to talk to your food. You get the idea.

  2. Let the child lead.

Does your child show passion for a particular subject? Let that be the focus of his or her writing assignments.

Sure, you might want your child to write about the value of the electoral college, but if he or she would rather explore the value of space travel, let them go for it.

By making writing something fun and exciting, you take it out of the realm of a chore and turn it into play. Children love play. And they learn better when they are caught up in enjoying the moment.

  3. Use a tape recorder.

Maybe your child doesn't hate writing, but instead, struggles with the physical act of writing. If so, invest in a small digital recorder. Or voice recognition software for the computer.

It's all about making the process of creating and learning fun and easy.

Your child only gets one childhood. Making homeschool writing fun can be a way to enrich those precious years.
