How to Start Homeschooling in North Carolina

by Jennifer
(fayetteville, nc)

I have a 5 year old daughter, a 3yr old son and a 2yr old daughter.

Im looking to start my 5 yr old this year and I dont have a clue where to register her or if I have to register her somewhere? I have no clue where to get curriculum? How much is the kindergarten curriculum?

I live in nc, do these things vary by state? Im sorry to ask so many questions but I just feel so lost! If you can answer any of this for me I would be so grateful.

Thank you and God Bless!

Hi Jennifer
Take a deep breath! It's not so confusing once you get started.

Firstly, yes things do vary by state. But in North Carolina you don't have to register your homeschool until your oldest child is 7 - so you have plenty of time to figure out the regulations and decide what you would like to do.

To help you get started I have a free workbook that will talk you through what you need to do step by step - just sign up on my how to start homeschooling page.

I took a look at the requirements for you and filled out the workbook form.

but do take a look yourself to make sure you really understand what you need to do.

You will see that you don't have to do anything official to homeschool your 5year old. And you really don't need a kindergarten curriculum unless you really want to use one. Just start by reading to your children, help them to count things and maybe talk a little about the letters of the alphabet. You will be amazed at how much your daughter learns just by doing day to day activities with her like cooking or gardening - or going on a nature walk together. You could print off some free coloring sheets for her or some kindergarten worksheets - there are lots of free printables available on the internet if you look.

Get yourself organised for when she gets older by finding out as much as you can about homeschooling and finding some local homeschoolers. Work through my free book - and take a look at some of the pages listed below.

Best of luck, and I hope you enjoy homeschooling as much as we do!

Julie.
